SummerJam weekend is known to be the most legendary weekend in jam skating history. The music is constantly raging, cyphers are almost infinite, and the fun never stops. SummerJam is the biggest jam skating event there is each year, with over three hundred people attending, it’s bound to be a good time. This event is sponsored by VNLA and is held in different states each summer. The event itself is guaranteed to be a boatload of fun even without the battles, top twenty ninety second solos, and workshops taught by the best skaters every day.
Getting ‘SummerJam Ready’ is no easy task, in fact, it often pushes skaters over their limits. How does one get mentally and physically ready for the biggest event of the year? Obviously everyone has their own tactics for getting ready for this event, but for Juli Bolt from Kounterfit Klothing it’s so much more. She said: “A week before SummerJam I sit in the middle of the skate floor and remember every motivational thing ever said to me. I let the motivation fuel the fire and BOOM- I’m SummerJam ready.”
Getting ‘SummerJam Ready’ is one of the most important things to do, just like it’s important for any athlete to warm up before the big competition. Kounterfit Prospekt Dylan Morton said: “I practice as hard as I can and I record myself freestyling to random songs so I can be prepared for anything.” Other skaters like Kounterfit Prospekt, Mili Hernandez prefers to meditate more on how far she’s come since the last SummerJam: “I like to watch videos from the previous year. I like to talk with other skaters that are going to be there to get the vibes going.”
While some skaters prefer to skate their hearts out to get ‘SummerJam’ ready other believe it’s more of a mental preparation. Nolan Edwards from VNLA said: “I prepare myself by putting my headphones in and tuning the world out, however, you can never be mentally prepared for an event like this because your mind will be blown away by all the raw talent in one area.” Steve Cantrell from VNLA said: “I just focus on skating with my boys and enjoying it and everything else just comes. I don’t have a set mental preparation, but my thoughts range from visualizing how I plan on attacking the week to the focus I need to carry to be better than my previous event.”
SummerJam 2015 is upon us. This year, the biggest jam skating event will be held in Gastonia, North Carolina July 16-19. Skaters have prepared themselves for months- working on solos that’ll be auditioned in hopes of making the top twenty and new moves for the countless battles that’ll be held. Nolan Edwards said: “At SummerJam this year you can expect the greatest display of what this sport truly entails. The intensity builds up ALL YEAR LONG for this ONE EVENT!”
So now the final question is: Are YOU SummerJam ready?!
