How to Choose the Best Beginner Speed Skates

If there’s one thing that every beginner has in common, it’s a fast learning curve and this is especially true for beginners on roller skates. The first month on speed skates will either make you or break you but you will learn more during this time than in the near future. Beginner skaters are like sponges and the first couple months are when newbies soak up all the fundamentals that lay the foundation. From balance, confidence, stopping to starting and everything in between learning to speed skate starts with choosing the right pair of roller skates!

Let’s first define what a speed skate is, shall we?

Speed skates are among one of the most popular design styles of roller skates and they are meant to go fast. Speed skates feature low cut boots that fit your feet similar to tennis shoes and this low cut design helps you cut corners and maintain agility. As a result of the freedom they provide, these skates are very popular for jam (dance) skating and of course, speed skating. They also feature speed style wheels and bearing which enable skaters to skate faster and longer.

Ask yourself these 5 questions and you will be well prepared to make a decision about which speed skates are best for you!

1. Do you like using velcro straps?

Let’s lay out the pros and cons of velcro straps:

+ Help you achieve a custom snug fit

+ Very simple to use!

+ Velcro straps can quickly be adjusted on the go

+ Prevent laces from untying

- Velcro straps collect dirt and debris

- May stretch over time and prohibit you from keeping a snug fit

-  The comfort of your skates will be affected if the velcro strap were to break off

If you are buying beginner speed skates for someone who uses velcro straps on their tennis shoes, we reckon they will easily adapt to this style. The pros of velcro straps outweigh the cons and it really comes down to personal taste.

2. Will you be using your speed skates for roller derby?

Search for a pair of speed skates that match your derby team colors. You also want to be sure you buy speed skates with adjustable toe stops to become accustomed to the distance between the toe stop and the track. Roller derby is most often played indoor so look for skates with indoor wheels.

3. Will you be skating indoors or outdoors?

Your Guide to Buying Outdoor Roller Skates

The first question to answer here is “What is the difference between outdoor roller skates and indoor roller skates”?

The answer is straightforward and simple; outdoor quad skates feature wheels that are soft which allows for a smoother roll on the non-smooth surfaces such as sidewalks & streets. The indoor quad skates feature wheels which are typically harder than outdoor wheels. A harder wheel will give you a smoother roll on very smooth surfaces like those at skating rinks.

Although the main difference depends on the type of wheels, it’s also important to choose the right material and boot for outdoor weather conditions. Let’s go over the major differences in boot style and material type below.

High top or Low top Boots?

Outdoor roller skates comes in either low top or high top boots but also in many types of leathers, suedes and synthetic materials.

When choosing between a high top or low top roller skate, ask yourself how comfortable you are in the boots and shoes you wear everyday. Do you like the comfort and support that high top shoes provide but do you think your movement is limited?

High top outdoor rollers skates are similar to high top boots but they aren’t as supportive as hiking boots. You should go with a high top boot if you like the way it looks and if you don’t mind the feeling around the shins.

Personally, I think hightop boots are packed with class and fashion. They simply look more genuine than low top boots and they’re more suitable for winter conditions. You can also crank down your laces for a tighter fit. High boots generally offer more ankle support, so go with these if you have ankle problems.

On the other hand, low top boots are more sporty and agileWe recommend to buy low top boots if your sole purpose in roller skating is fitness because they are generally lighter and allow you to make quicker turns.

Low boots are more popular and allow you to move your ankle more freely and are not as hot on your foot. The low top boots are generally considered speed boots.

How The Boot Is Made.

Boots are either real or fake but the fake boots should be taken seriously because there have many many advancements in the manufacturing process of synthetic material aka vinyl.

For example, vinyl boots won’t crack or fade as easy as leather and they will hold up in the hot sun more than leather. This synthetic material will also outlast the hot sun longer than leather and it’s washable.

Leather comes from an animal so just ask yourself if animals get scratches, scars and scrapes? The imperfections on a leather boot will be more visible than on synthetic materials  but leather breaks in with time and fits like a glove.

Remember, suede is leather but just turned inside out. Suede can be made from any type of leather and it gives off a classic look. Therefore, most of our suede boots are high tops such as our Boardwalk Outdoor Roller Skates.

In the end, most vinyl boots are not made for competitive use, but rather recreational skating. Vinyl is not as durable or comfortable as leather, but is less expensive. The choice is up to you and feel free to contact us with any questions.
