Do you usually just grab your skates and throw them on at the rink? And that is the only time you ever touch them? No problem! For a lot of skaters that works just fine, but sometimes a little maintenance to your skates can make a big difference.
In what way? Both in the performance of your skates aka how they roll when you go skate, and in longevity of your skates aka how long they will last you.
Check your toe stops! Depending on which style toe stops you have, sometimes they can become loose, or one becomes way more worn down than the other. No problem! Just tighten them up using a skate tool, or switch which skates your toe stops are on. Most of us use a dominant foot more for stopping than the other, just like you use a certain hand to eat with. By rotating your toe stops if they become worn, this can make them last way longer! Both worn out? Make sure you replace them! If you do not replace your toe stops when they get worn down, there is usually metal holding them onto your skate and it can become exposed. What does that mean? You may put a huge gash in the skate floor where you skate, and let me tell ya, skating rink owners do NOT like that.
Check your wheels! Just like with toe stops, wheels can become loose, when you are able to move them away from your skate on the axle without removing the axle nut…they are too loose. Also the wheels can wear unevenly, if you use a certain foot, for a certain movement you do regularly. So rotate your wheels just like your car tires! Not sure how to change wheels?
