The vision of roller skates has dramatically changed over the course of time; the very first documented roller skate was made up of two small wheels, no axles or trucks, a solid platform and a strap that secures the users feet. Throughout the course of history, many different people have come up with ideas that better the idea of roller skates. Some of those ideas include: Plates, axles, trucks, bearings, and more! If prior inventions were never created the modern roller skate that is known so well today would remain an uncomfortable metal plate.
Learning how to roller skate isn’t easy, but learning to roller skate in an old boot that isn’t comfortable is miserable. Skating with old, tarnished skates isn’t the best way to go. As technology is advancing, so are roller skates. Going from nothing but a metal platform to a full out denim boot is astonishing! The Denims are one of the newest addition to the VNLA Junior Skate Collection created by Brandon Perea. The Denims were launched in November of 2014, and their features were completely different to any other skate that’s currently on the market.
The Denims were appropriately named (as their boot is completely made up of blue jean denim). Bringing denim onto roller skates is something new to all the roller skating community, and it definitely had an impact on everyone that has been able to skate in this boot. Classic Sk8 Crew Member Mili Hernandez said: “The denim boot was something new to me; I have never seen a roller skate made up of denim before! I like the boot because it hardly scuffs. Brandon Perea did a great job designing the boot and VNLA did an amazing job with bringing them to life.”
Having denim as the main component on a roller skate has a lot of advantages: little to no scuff marks and the average life span of the skate tends to last longer. Denim is a slick material which creates no friction to the surface that is being skated on. The material practically glides across the ground! Since denim is a soft and stretchy material, much like the jeans we wear today, the break in process is simple too.
The idea of adding denim to a roller skate changed the game, but the all-around goal when creating any new skate is making sure they’re comfortable. Having a comfortable roller skate is beneficial for the user because it makes blisters a rare thing. “I like having skates make me feel like they’re my actual shoes,” said RaDarius Pough. Any skate can look cool on the outside, but if there’s no support for the users feet then the design is useless. The Denims are just one of many other pairs of skates that have changed the roller skating industry.
There are a lot of different brands and types of roller skates to skate on, but all that matters is that you’re happy with what you skate on. Not everybody will like to skate on denim roller skates, but not everybody enjoys skating on a leather boot. It is all opinion, and when it comes to picking the right skate, there’s not a bad choice!
